There have been a lot of references to Shyamalan and Hitchcock. I wouldn't put him at the same level as Hitchcock, not yet, but is it possible that he could bounce back? I look at the ratings here for Hitchcock movies and it looks like he made a bunch of stinkers as well. Although I'm not sure Hitchcock started off as strong so maybe that's why things have become so discouragin for Shyamalan. What do you guys think? Is it possible he has just made some of his bad films recently as part of a learning process? Or did he just use up his gimmicks and he's done? I think the comparisons are tenuous at best, and that's not even getting on discussions of quality or greatness. I don't see how the sorts of films Shyamalan should attract Hitchcock fans, and vice versa.

When I made the Hitchcock comment, I didn't know that some other people have made similar comments before. You are right that their aesthetics are not comparable. Probably the fact that films of both can be broadly classified under "thriller" is what leads to the comparison.

You don't think the long camera shots on one actor's slightly changing, if at all, facial expressions resembles some of of what Hitchcock did? I know that is no reason to compare, but by today's popular standards I can see why people would make that connection. Plus the thriller genre.
So I want to rephrase my question without the direct comparison to Hitchcock. Is it possible that this current streak of films are a learning process for Shyamalan? Every director makes some bad movies. I am personally hoping the last couple of movies are just a speed bump in his overall career.

I need watch Sixth Sense again. I too hope he does bounce back. His films have at least attempted to do something different and original(if I may say so).
