I just caught the 2nd half of Unbreakable on tv. Not quite as good as I remembered it, but i've come to the conclusion that I think Shyamalan was my liaison of sorts between more mainstream cinema and the weirder and older stuff. His films were widely seen enough for me to actually kind of accidentally bump into them, and then I feel like subliminally my preferences for films started changing after I had.
Maybe. Just a theory.

Only two of the six films I've seen of his end with what I would call plot twists: The Sixth Sense and The Village.
Unbreakable and Wide Awake have "surprise endings", perhaps, but not twists.

I do enjoy a good Robot Chicken now and then.

Mark Wahlberg to Star in Shyamalan's "Happening"
Retired rapper and underwear model Mark Wahlberg's cinematic hot streak looks set to continue at least into next year: According to Variety, the "Shooter" and "The Departed" actor is set to star in director M. Night Shyamalan's next film, "The Happening."
"The Happening," set to film in Philadelphia, revolves around a natural disaster which threatens to wipe out the human race; Wahlberg plays a science teacher who takes his family on an emergency field trip in an effort to save the world.
Shyamalan, who would seem to have a lot riding on "The Happening" after the disastrous performance of his last film, 2006's "Lady in the Water," tells Variety:
"Mark has a unique blend of charisma, humanity, authenticity and skillfulness as an actor...all of which coalesced at this moment in his career, making him the perfect person to take on the role of Eliot Moore, the science teacher at the center of this event."
The movie is set to debut Friday, June 13, 2008 (spooky!) and reunites Shyamalan with his "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" producer, Barry Mendel. Wahlberg will next be seen in "The Brazilian Job," with Charlize Theron, and "The Fighter," with Matt Damon.

I'm more worried for Wahlberg's sake than for Shyamalan's.

I think this is the first Shyamalan film I'm not excited about. (and not because of Wahlberg's involvement)

I think Shyamalan had a ridiculous amount of free time to make his first film, without much pressure of expectation. After that he has declined consistently because of expectations I guess. Now that he is pretty much in the ditches as far as respect goes, there is a chance for him to bounce back. But he is no Hitchcock. Or at least till now.

Note that The Sixth Sense was his third film. His second, Wide Awake, is garbage.
He NEEDS to direct from someone else's screenplay. At least his next film is an adaptation.
1. Unbreakable (2000) ***** 2. The Sixth Sense (1999) ***** 3. The Village (2004) ***** 4. Signs (2002) ***** 5. Lady in the Water (2006) ***** 6. Wide Awake (1998) ***** 7. The Happening (2008) *****

There have been a lot of references to Shyamalan and Hitchcock. I wouldn't put him at the same level as Hitchcock, not yet, but is it possible that he could bounce back? I look at the ratings here for Hitchcock movies and it looks like he made a bunch of stinkers as well. Although I'm not sure Hitchcock started off as strong so maybe that's why things have become so discouragin for Shyamalan. What do you guys think? Is it possible he has just made some of his bad films recently as part of a learning process? Or did he just use up his gimmicks and he's done?
