I think The Darjeeling Limited is his best film, but barely found it LOL-funny. It was more of the smile/chuckle-funny to me.
Probably the least fey and twee Wes Anderson movie.

I think The Darjeeling Limited is his best film, but barely found it LOL-funny. It was more of the smile/chuckle-funny to me. It's funny you say that, because I have friends who love Anderson, but also think his sense of humor is more the type that would make you chuckle but not laugh loudly. I think he's hilarious, and one of the best comedic directors around. I just love dry, dead-pan humor. And on top of all this, he doesn't sacrifice any heart for his humor. That's just one of the many things that make him the best in my mind; his ability to keep the emotional portion of his work alive while throwing in joke after joke.

Darjeeling is the funniest opening (of the film proper) I've seen in years. Bill Murray does absolutely nothing and makes me laugh my tits off. That zoom-in from high up onto the speeding car was priceless... somehow. And the slow-motion shot of him missing the train; how can "effort= futile" be an uplifting vibe?

I always feel like Bill Murray seems to be doing something weird whenever the camera cuts to him, regardless of what film he's in or which director he is working with. That's what makes him so funny to me.
For example, in the scene following the opening narration of The Royal Tenenbaums, when it runs through the cast of characters, Murray is brushing his teeth. I don't know why, but it makes me laugh everytime. It just seems to be an awkward action, perhaps because he's looking directly into the camera while he does it, but I think the fact that he is Bill Murray has something to do with it.
But yes, Anderson somehow makes the simplest of occurances hilarious. I don't know why that is, and for some reason, it seems to go right over a decent number of heads. I always feel like I'm the only one laughing when I watch one of his movies with a group, with the exception of the less subtle jokes.

Who runs into the glass door? Is it Owen Wilson? I was literally keeled over in my seat when that happened.

Jason Schwartzman, I believe.
That entire scene made me laugh histerically all the way through. It's probably the funniest moment in the film.

I find his visual gags far funnier than his dialogue. The slow-motion shot of Murray missing the train, for instance; Schwartzman (thanks) running into the glass door; the three-legged dog in Life Aquatic (so subtly placed in the frame, when we first see it; I couldn't breathe when I saw it).

Hahaha... I forgot about that dog. Definitely one of the funnier spots of the film. When Jeff Goldbloom smacked him, I laughed so hard I nearly vomited.
