I must admit, these mediocre ratings of and negative comments about Youth without Youth are only making me more interested in seeing it.

I do like some stuff about it. Apparently it was shot on HD-DV and, man, it's pretty damn great. Well, on DVD it is. Lara is fantastic especially as Laura. The first 30-odd minutes were engrossing to me.
Coppola gets major props from me for trying out this type of material even if I found it unsuccessful. He could have easily done safe stuff especially with him largely self-financing YWY and as he's planning to do from now on, but he didn't.

Rumble Fish The Cotton Club Peggy Sue Got Married I've been going through Coppola's filmography, and I've just watched these three. Rumble Fish(1983/Francis Ford Coppola) [First Viewing] A small time delinquent struggles with his identity when his mysterious older brother returns to town. One of Coppola's most interesting films, filmed in rich black and white and filled with shadows and a foggy surreal atmosphere. Coppola delivers his characters in a dreamlike fashion (Diane Lane's first appearance on the bus is unlike anything I've seen in a Coppola film) with dialogue to match the surreal aspect of the mood. The Cotton Club(1984/Francis Ford Coppola) [First Viewing] A musician rises to the top after saving a mobster's life in 1920s Harlem.Beautiful costume design and art direction provide the film with great period detail and feel (though the appearance of famous people during the period gets old after awhile), but the main plotline with Richard Gere is lifeless and dull, and when the film tries to get dramatic in the second half with Nicolas Cage as Gere's brother, the film reeks of a desire to evoke "The Godfather". The subplot with Gregory Hines should have been a separate film, and it might have been quite good. Peggy Sue Got Married(1986/Francis Ford Coppola) [First Viewing] A grown woman travels back in time and gets to relive her life during the last days of high school in 1960.Good period detail and atmosphere again here, but it's hard not to be reminded of the superiority and similarities all of this has with "Back to the Future", released a year earlier. Aside from standard conventions in the drama/comedy/fantasy department, there are some genuinely touching moments. The final part of the film goes completely off tracks, however.

Wow, you actually watched CAPTAIN EO?
I think I did that ride as a 4 year old, barely remember it as just a blur.

I saw it a couple times as a kid but you can see it in 2D on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AstW05bDiQUI'm probably giving it a better rating than it deserves. For the record, I much prefer Magic Journeys (the show Captain EO replaced).

Taken from Tetro website. The website runs on flash and other fancy stuff and doesn't allow me to put a simple link.

Hearts of Darkness has been available on DVD for quite a while now, which I didn't know of until now. When I tried to get it once, all I could find was a bad quality VHS version. Anyway, FYI.

Isn't that DVD come with a Coppola commentary track?
Be interesting to hear him deny everything. "No I didn't try to kill myself, it was a misunderstanding..."
