A great guy to listen to. His audio commentary for The Godfather, though mild for his style, is pure enjoyment, as is the documentary on Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness.

Of course the rating for Dracula (which although is very silly is still a favourite, we all need entertaining sometimes) is based purely on Keannu Reeve's saying the words "I know where the bastard sleeps" in an English accent that even Dick Van Dyke would cringe at, okay as well as being a massive fan of the genre, and the references to both Murnau and Browning's films are fun to find in there too.

Though I adore The Conversation, Apocalypse Now in it's original edit remains my favourite of Coppola's more notable "big" movies, I have seen both the first version and the Redux on the big screen and found the original to be better paced and tighter (I even fell asleep when I watched Redux, something I have done only once before in the pictures, coincidentally during another Coppola opus "Godfather Part III") that said however although I feel that the scene on the French plantation could have left out at the time I first saw the Redux, and still do for that matter, the little extra bits of the Duvall Kilgore/Air Cav sequence are parts that would have fitted into the original quite well.

I was about to watch Apocalypse Now today, but its the Redux version. I know its only the Director's Cut but does anyone know if its better to watch the original cut of it first? Or does it not matter in the slightest?

I have both versions; Redux adds little, really. Neither better nor worse, but I always tend to watch Redux out of the two.

As Capo said if you're watching for the first time I think it matters little, which. I personally prefer the original version probably because that was the film I grew up watching, although the Redux does include Martin Sheen making off with Bobby Duvall's surfboard which is worth it in itself I think

One thing to note: Redux's French plantation scene adds little to the original, but if you watch this first, it may be unbearable in its painstaking pace and surface irrelevancy.

Same here, omar. They're 4 of the greatest films ever made, and all of them are great in their own special and unique ways. Can't really say which is my favorite.

Although, I would say The Conversation is his most personal film by a long shot.
