Really needs a rewatch for me. It's been at least 2 years, I remember so little of it.
And wow, Valenti, I just noticed that you've never seen Goodfellas or Casino. Is this true?

Actually, and this is embarrassing to admit, it's true.
I've only caught bits and pieces on cable TV, and then something intervenes--like sex, or food, or my child needs help with something--and I just never got around to watching either of them full on.

Really, Jack? I recall you telling me about a year ago or so that Casino was your favorite gangster movie... But maybe it was someone else... Or maybe I said, to you, that is was my favorite gangster movie... I think the last one is a possibility.

I love that part in Casino, when James Woods tells Ginger's daughter to shut up, and she whips back "You shut up"...pause...quickly sticks her tongue out at him.
Always makes me laugh out loud.

I think it was YOU who told ME that.
Whore. Get the facts straight, lest I skin you while masturbating.

I must've been misguided at the time. Once Upon a Time in America is the best film to deal with gangsterism, in my opinion. I've felt this since 2002... But I think OUATIA has a bit more emotional context, and isn't a straight-forward portrayal of gangsterism. Casino, on the other hand is much more hands-on, into the work and everyday life of these characters.
I'd like to eat you up with jam, and lick salt out of your belly-button, party-girl.

OUATIA is one of my favorite films. It made me feel more emotions at once--disgust, nostalgia, enjoyment, rage, confusion--than almost any other film with the exceptions of Eraserhead and Punch Drunk Love. It truly is an epic, almost novel-like movie.

From Hollywood.com: Scorsese Set to Become Film Critic By WENN| Tuesday, August 29, 2006 HOLLYWOOD - Famed director Martin Scorsese has been hired as a film critic for a satellite TV service after complaining about their movie review system. The Aviator director will pen a monthly column for On DirecTV, a magazine and program guide for people who subscribe to DirecTV. Scorsese will offer critiques of overlooked films on DirecTV. Executives at the company came up with the idea when Scorsese, a DirecTV subscriber, wrote to the firm to suggest changes in the movie review system.

He's one of the few people who can really persuade you to fall in love with a film you'd never even been interested in before. In fact, whenever I listen to him, I simply want to watch every single film ever made.
What were his criticisms of the system, do you know?

Hmmmm...Capo...if Godard wants to destroy the idea of culture, and much of Scorsese's films are about culture, and portraying culture, then how could you love them both?

Ever juggled two contradicting ideas in the same hand? And I'm not even sure if these are contradicting.
I find both filmmakers' work very interesting to watch. It's not necessarily what they're about or what they're not about; it's how they do it.

I originally gave The King of Comedy a 3 (or a 2, on my old system), and since I can't remember when or why, or even if (it could well be a typo) I dropped it to 2 stars, I restored it to 3.
I really enjoyed The Departed. I find that with most Scorsese films, that they don't make a lasting impression, I don't find myself dwelling on them, but it was fun and very engaging for its duration.
It also helped me realise that I like it when stories and their narratives have a discernable (though imaginary) "shape" to them. I'm not sure I can explain what I mean by that, because I don't think I understand it myself. Something about the way in which the delivery of information syncs up to the characters relationships - in this film, the two parties infiltrating oneanother on various levels and how the narrative structure reflects that, with characters kind of mirroring eachother (DiCaprio and Damon, Nicholson and Sheen, Wahlberg and Winstone), there's a symmetry, I think I visualised it a little like a Rorschach...
I need to think that over more. Maybe you know what I'm talking about?
