Be Kind Rewind opens tomorrow. I'm sad that Dave Chappelle was to play the part that went to Mos Def, but stepped away from the movie. I love early Mos Def, the emcee, but he's awful in some of the clips in the trailer. It's just a trailer, though.

I just got in from seeing it. Mos Def's pretty good in it, I think. Jack Black's hilarious, though; again, Gondry strikes (at the end) a fine measure between hilarity and poignancy. I liked it, but I doubt it'll stay with me for as long as the two others I've seen.
I've felt quite ill all day, though, and the fact that I was laughing out (very) loud watching this film probably means it's excellent. I liked Sigourney Weaver's cameo, too - throughout I was searching for some sort of self-reflexive appearance like that, but only in the post-screening drinks afterwards did someone remind me she starred in Ghostbusters.

Jack Black was also in the remake of King King, the Sweded King Kong being the fourth version of that film. Also, someone in the position of Sigourney Weaver's character would've been the one to intercede and halt the production in 2006 by forbidding references to Back to the Future. Anyway, it's very funny and charming, if a little gooey toward the end. I think my favourite joke was actually Danny Glover in the other video store making a list of observations, which is pretty low-key I guess, but I just agreed so strongly! ;D I also loved the transitions between the various Swedings in the montage sequence . It's like his video for "Lucas with the Lid Off".

I also loved the transitions between the various Swedings in the montage sequence. Agreed - I was looking for the invisible edits but it was just done so seamlessly; I was also trying to keep up with the different references. Men in Black was very clever. Jack Black being in King Kong is more obvious than Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters; can't believe I forgot. As for the "gooey" ending, others came out saying stuff like, "What was all that community shit all about?" I can't disagree too much, but I found the actual projection scene, as filmed from the inside, very poignant; it moved me, anyway.
