Alien Blade Runner Thelma & Louise Gladiator Black Hawk Down Hannibal Matchstick men Kingdom of Heaven Really a man who has made great, big films all over. I'm watching The Duellists soon, and some of his 80's films, to complete his oeuvre (though I'm hesitated to watch his less-succesfull 90's films, GI Jane especially)

You rate American Gangster so high, Ronnie? I liked it, but it's about as impure as Blue Magic isn't. Very flawed.
Does the same apply to Gladiator as a hybrid of previous swords-and-sandals epics (Spartacus and Fall of the Roman Empire)? Probably, but it's such a well-measured throwback compared to American Gangster...

Ah, but the difference was that to me GLADIATOR had some dead spots inbetween the well-shot action sequences.....take that sequence when Crowe is visited in prison by the Emperor's sister. I mean, does that "past relationship" shit even work? Not really. The actors are good, Ridley seems motivated, and yet the script is......not much. Let's just put it at that. Besides, did AMERICAN GANGSTER end with a bullshit ending where an Empire is restored as a Republic? Umm NO. Hell, you gotta dig that visual ending for GANGSTER...a deposed King now a pauper, an alienated foreigner lost in time within his own domain.

Oh wait, suddenly Frank Lucas is helping them? There was no indication that he would turn at all in the film. He was portrayed differently, and instead of spacing things out and making his turn feel real, Scott relies mostly on text at the end to sum up what should have been the finale. And Crowe being the lawyer at the end was a little much. I do like the final moment, however.

Lucas never "turns," he simply is a gangster that gets revenge. That's it. But yeah, that "text ending" did annoy me. Its pure compensation for the sake that the original ending, where older Crowe picks up older Lucas....was aborted in favor of that GREAT finale shot. Though we got stuck with the text, I must say....that last shot might have been worth it. If only they had realized that in the first place, and scripted around it.

Brolin's "character" was laughable and cartoonish. And turned might be the wrong word; "flipped" works better. Brolin wasn't the only one that he ratted against, he was just the silly caricature that represented all of the corruption.

This opinion was shared before but I wanted to give my two cents. "American Gangster" is a wonderful crime epic in the tradition of "Little Caesar" and "Scarface" that has wonderful performances and a great screenplay by Steven Zailian and great direction by Scott. It's a genre film, but it's so well done and so entertaining. Great example of intelligent entertainment which is something you aren't gurranteed in a film coming from the Hollywood studio system now-a-days. The themes may have been explored before but it tells a wonderful crime story and was one of the finer films of 2007
