A real revolutionary of early cinema, what appears at first to be cliched textbook imagery and characterisation within his pictures have a way of hitting you smack in the face as something else entirely upon further viewing. His ironic sensibilities allowed him to get much past the censors back in the 30s though at the same time probably kept him from working on the prestige projects he so wanted to direct. Even so his wicked sense of humour and eye for production design and high theatre ensure his more famous films will be regarded for many years. Waterloo Bridge Frankenstein The Old Dark House The Invisible Man Bride of Frankenstein Showboat modified selections, forgot all about Showboat!!!!
