Docot r Zhivago is more of a soap opera before anything but a damned good one at that and probably the most conventional film he ever made and shows he can handle melodrama fairly well. But it really isn't as great as it's been made to be but pretty close. The highpoint would be Mauricce Jarre's wonderfuly lush score.

Marty, I'm surprised to see a clear fan of Lean give Brief Encounter two stars. Doctor Zhivago is a slow, over-blown epic with little human interest and fantastic images. I'd like to see it again. [/i].[/quote] Although I find Brief Encounter quite charming, I also find it very predictable, as well as a little staid too, I suppose the morality of the time dictated the ending, but interestingly both Howard and Johnson reprised their roles on radio in the early 50s (which has often had an airing on BBC over the years)and somehow the piece works more for me as a radio play. Zhivago however is my least favourite Lean film, that said though I was fortunate enough to see this in a cinema presentation and Pasternak's self absorbed tale is made worthwhile by the scope of the cinematography, hence 2 stars rather than 1.

I have about four favorite directors, if that makes sense. I wouldn't put one of these guys in front of the other as far as who I'd rather watch. They are Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Federico Fellini, David Lean.
1. Lawrence of Arabia 2. Bridge on the River Kwai 3. Doctor Zhivago
Yeah, I've only seen three. But they are three of my top favorites, and if I could have anyone's films and call them my own, they would be Leans.

What Lean brings to the epic is that epic scale n his cinematogaphy and his subject matter. Sure, Wyler kind of hit upon the scope, but for the most part, epics were never the same after Lean.
Just look at the way he photographed the frozen tundra in, "Doctor Zhivago" or the massive exapnses of destert in "Lawrence...". I don't think there'a a diretor before or since who can match his eye for the truly magestic.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1958) Lawrence of Arabia (1962) I think that's enough rating for me tonight, it's a bit addicting.

I think that's enough rating for me tonight, it's a bit addicting. Ha! You should try doing it systematically, from A-Z. You think, "If only I can get to J before bedtime", and when you do you think the same for S and so on. It gets hold of you.
