Godfrey Reggio (1940- )1. Anima Mundi (1992) 7/102. Koyaanisqatsi (1982) 7/103. Powaqqatsi (1988) 6/10These films are simply documentary images set to music. There's next to no coherent narrative structure; it's as though, while digging through the hundreds of hours of footage he no doubt shot while jetsetting around all these exotic locations, Reggio has edited according to his mood at the time of editing - as though editing a week later or on an empty stomach could have produced a totally different visual sequence (for instance, there's one shot of swaying maize, or something, that lasts barely a second in Powaqqatsi, set between two images that bear no relation). Is that a bad thing? I don't know. What I do know is that a significant amount of the images in these sequences are breath-takingly, heart-stoppingly beautiful. I have Naqoyqatsi ready to watch.
