I think I might like it now, having only seen it once long ago; but at the time its machismo, "let's make a man's movie" feel repelled me. The only thing I remember about it was the POV shot when Bettany's torturing a guy to death, which I thought was pretty neat. Otherwise, a missable, bloody melodrama.

A disturbingly beautiful portrait of a slow descent into simmering jealous rage and insanity. I feel like you're probably just remembering the middle section of the film, set in the 60's, depicting the main character's rise to power. The last segment, set some 20 or 30 years later, really rounds the characters out and gives the film some depth. (Good depth ).

I've loved Gangster No. 1. Not only because it's a stylish gangster flick--which I'm a sucker for--but because it's just so goddamn interesting because it's done from the perspective of a bit player. That's MY interpretation of it: that Bettany's character is a sidekick to the ACTUAL protaganist, Freddie Mays. I mean, it would've been an everyday gangster flick if it had been from Freddie's POV: a gangster, following near death, redeems himself.
I don't know...also, the shots of Bettany doing the silent shriek gave me chills. I've seen men do that before.

That's so amazing you mention that. I actually loved that scene so much, the silent scream in the elevator, that I took the audio from that and used it in my most recent short film project at school, in a similar type of scene. God I want to watch this movie now.

It's scary. The first time it happened, I jumped in my seat.
