Mimic Blade II
Hellboy looks stupid and I'm laughing at the fact that he's making a film out of Halo.

I must recommend that people see Guillermo del Toro's Spanish-language films. Rich in allegory, thematically complex and obsessive, visually gorgeous, and with the tendency toward abstract metaphysical metaphor that marks Julio Medem's work - perhaps it's a Spanish thing. Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best films of 2006.

I can't say the trailer does much for me, but then again, trailers rarely do. I like how there wasn't one sign of any Spanish dialogue in the trailer. All facial looks and reactions and animation. One of them even has an English voice-ove. ;D
I'll check it out if and when I can. I missed it at my Odeon (it was playing there, oddly enough), but my arthouse has it coming soon.

I just realised I had a chance to see Mimic on TV, Saturday gone. Oh well. There's a good chance I might be able to catch The Devil's Backbone on the big screen, New Year's Eve, though.

A lot of dislike for Del Toro here, I'm surprised. I wonder if Pan's Labyrinth fell victim to advertising giving false expectations.

I know that some were shocked with the level of violence in the movie. It was not along the same lines as, say, Narnia. If you listened to the extras (see Kino, I do visit them sometimes, lol) in the DVD, the film accomplishes a lot technically. It definitely is a well made movie.

For me, the premise alone is wonderful: a child's eye view of the last days of the anarchist struggle against Spanish fascism that renders the conflict in the allegory of a fairytale.
And yes, an exceptionally well-made movie. Dumb English title, though.
I don't see what's not to like; certainly to the point of preferring Mimic (which I haven't seen in ten years, it should be said).

I've been meaning to watch The Devil's Backbone and Chronos. After seeing your decent ratings for them I'm going to have to watch them sooner. I will try and post some thoughts within the next couple of weeks.
