Carlos Reygadas (1971- )1. Silent Light (2007) 7/102. Japón (2002) 7/103. Battle in Heaven (2005) 4/10Battle in Heaven was very, very disappointing. Japón was a muddled pastiche of a handful of styles, primarily Herzog's and Tarkovsky's, but it worked. Battle in Heaven doesn't. It's dull. There are a couple of shots that look nice (looking like leftovers from Japón, actually), and it manages to intermittently establish an interesting tone, but it doesn't sustain it. Again, the frank depiction of sex is commendable, but it's not enough on its own.

I'm interested in both, though Japón would get priority. Battle in Heaven sounded just your thing when I read reviews upon its release...

For those "unfathomably elapsed dollies that seem to tear into the fabric of time and space"?
I can't wait to see it.

Those, yes, and for the opening and closing shots. The opening especially is the finest of the year.

Hm, wetdog... are you interested in seeing Battle in Heaven again? I was very much impressed by it. Those circling pans in the train station early on, the casual track out of the apartment (and subsequent exploration of the outside environment) when Ana is riding Marcos, the "tunnel-hearing" sound design, with only the visible mise-en-scene able to be heard; and that's just stylistic stuff - I thought the story was compelling as was its ambiguous, unsettling thematic explorations (though a lot of the Catholicism went over my head, and I would assume it's quite a vicious politicisation of contemporary Mexico). I can't wait to see Japón. EDIT: And I find this IMDb trivia irresistible: "Reygadas shot crowded street scenes in the middle of real crowds. His cameraman sat in a wheelchair and they just pushed him through everyone. Luckily, no one who passed by looked into the camera lens."
