Dassin died on March 31, 2008. He was 96 years old. Brute Force The Naked City Thieves' Highway Night and the City Rififi Never on Sunday Topkapi Rififi is probably the most influential heist film; arguably the greatest. Brute Force is one of the finest prison break movies. The Naked City is one of the best police procedurals. Night and the City is arguably the greatest of the greatest film noirs even with its flaws. I recommend starting with Rififi and Brute Force.

A director I've been interested in every since I discovered the Criterion Collection about five years ago.
No love for "Topkapi"? I was under the impression that it was one of his best, for some reason.

SVSG, you would've heard about Rififi soon enough, that is, if you already haven't prior to this thread and hopefully that would've lead you to more Dassin films. I think the fact that he got blacklisted and exiled has something to do w/ him not being as widely known and thus not mentioned as much as the conventional American greats - Ford, Chaplin, Welles, Hawks, Kubrick, Keaton and the like. But don't let the lack of literature or mainstream film culture status fool you, Dassin was in that top-tier.
Omar, I really like Topkapi, but 3 stars for me means a "must watch" and I don't think Topkapi is that just yet.
Bobbyreed, Rififi and Brute Force.

I own Rififi and Topkapi on DVD. There are some similarities between the too, storywise, with Rififi being the noir-drama and Topkapi being the colourful comedy.
I'm looking forward to seeing his other films...
96 is a very, very respectable age.
The famous heist-scène in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible (1996), where Tom Cruise hangs on a wire, is a reference to Dassin. It has been copied ever since and always De Palma is wrongfully credited.
It was also in Wallace & Gromit and the Wrong Trousers (1993), of which a teacher at film school also even said it was a nod to M:I!!!!
