I wonder why the drugs-AIDS/HIV connection wasn't explored in any of the seasons. Perhaps it merits a season by itself, but that is something I find a bit odd not to be touched upon.

SEASON FIVE SPOILERS It's a big part of Bubs's narrative in season five, at least till episode 4. The reason why he isn't taking a bigger part in serving food to the homeless and poor is that he's certain he has the Bug. Waylon (who has it) takes him for a test, and it comes back negative. Then at the end of it all, Dukie's the new Bubs... will he get it?
I don't know how they could have made it the main focus of a season. Is HIV as much a pandemic in Baltimore as murder? If you did focus on it, you'd have to inherently portray the hospitals and clinics that deal with it... which, with those being institutions, would make it worthwhile, probably.

Totally forgot about that part. I have no idea how prevalent AIDS is in Baltimore, but guessed that the drug culture should have some correlation with it.

In addition to what Capo mentioned,
Season 4 Spoiler
Miss Donnelly told Prez that Chiquan, who was the girl that got slashed in the face with a razor, was negative. Prez didn't understand what Donnelly was telling him. To which Cutty's ex-girlfriend (or Donnelly?) expounded that Chiquan was negative for HIV in case Prez was worrying.
I don't know the stats regarding HIV in Baltimore, but HIV tends to correlate highly with intravenous drug use or something like that.

Just finished the series....shit was amazing. Id been avoiding this topic, the IMDb page, everything associated with this show like the fucking plauge until I finished with the DVDs. This show was so damn good and I would have been pissed if the slightest thing was spoiled.
Ill probably go through this whole topic and read all of everyone's thoughts.
Side note: I hope theres a special circle in hell for people that can't take care of fucking DVDs. I had the last disc today and 72 minutes in when some major characters are talking outside the bar and the shit craps out. Looking at it under the light the disc looked like someone went to it with sandpaper. Only been out like a couple months and already some fucking asshole had to ruin the disc at the conclusion of the fucking series. Instead of watching the last 20 minutes of the series on my 62", I have to watch it on my computer after an extensive cleaning (for some reason my computer can play fucking anything).

JRod,
There's a little group of questions buried in this thread that I wanted people to answer to see how they were enjoying the season they just finished. Some simple stuff like:
Favorite season, theme(s), stories, scene(s), characters, dialogue, etc.?
I got three new ones:
Favorite actor(s)? Criticisms? The Wire's place not just among television series, but among contemporary artworks in general?

Favorite season, theme(s), stories, scene(s), characters, dialogue, etc.? This can pretty much all summed up by talking about Season 4, perhaps the best single season of any television show SEASON 4 SPOILERSYou see Bodie, Bubbles, Omar, Deangelo, Avon, Stringer-Bell, Marlo, etc throughout the series. Season 4 is the most interesting because it more or less gives you the "why" behind their characters, catching them before they are fully involved in "the game". I loved the whole series, but seeing the development of those four boys was my favorite part. The season also contains the best scene (Bodie in the last episode) and the best dialogue (Snoop, whenever she talks). SERIES SPOILERSOther favorite scenes throughout the series: Bunk and Omar talking about the old days and how shit has changed (S2 or S3, cant remember which) The "fuck" homicide investigation (S1) The scenes with Namond and his mother (S4) Rawls pep talk to McNulty after Kima is shot (S1) Drinking by the train tracks (All) Jaime Hector (Marlo Stanfield). That they stopped making episodes. Seriously though, I'd have to think about it, because there isn't many. I need to think about that one awhile...

SEASON 4 SPOILERSThe season also contains the best scene (Bodie in the last episode) Are you talking about his scene with McNulty in the garden or when he defends his corner? Both are fantastic. The latter is pretty powerful with the previous references to the pawns.

both scenes are great, although I was speaking about the 2nd of the two.
There is another scene with the same two characters earlier in the season at a restaurant that is great too. Bodie's parting quote to McNulty, "don't break your pencil" cracked me up

Funniest scenes, moments, and lines? I'll paraphrase dialogue lines. Off the top, here are mine: Series Spoilers "N*, you ain't got the floor. Chair ain't recognize your ass."
Shamrock taking minutes during a co-op meeting, and Stringer's, "Is you taking notes on a criminal fuckin' conspiracy?!"
Omar: She think I work in a cafeteria. Kimmy: Cafeteria? Where? Omar: At the airport. Kimmy: Airport? Why the airport? Omar: 'Cause I know she ain't gonna go down there just to go down there." Kimmy laughs. Omar: This ain't funny, Kimmy.
Rawls' double middle finger to McNulty. And that whole scene.
Bodie: Damn, man, why you ain't say somethin' before then. They probably wouldn't be tearin' this tower down now. They gon' put a big ass sign in the front that says, "Here is where Malik Carr first got his dick wet."
Fuck it. Williams killed that entire scene. Watch it.
Bubbles being everywhere.
The shot of him chillin' on a chair in the low rises after the audience sees Omar's first stickup.
The shot of him in the background watching the confrontation between Cheese and Mouzone at the towers.
The desk in the doorway in Season 1.
"I blew my wire for a dead terrier."
Wallace: Who's that? Your new girl or something?" D'Angelo: Nah, n*, that's my mom.
Chicken McNuggets
Especially Wallace's "Shit. He richer than a muthafucka."
and D'Angelo's: Why? You think he get a percentage?
LMAO.
Kima: Y'all ain't go no creep to y'all. A pair of goddamn elephants.
Carcetti's face after one of Norman's, "Sheeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiits."
Mayor Royce tellin' off Burrell for pulling Norris off the case for Kima. Especially the way he grunted or whatever.
Royce: You lose a case file. Misplace it in a drawer. *Grunts*
Something like that. Anyway, Turman (Royce) was fantastic.
Gus Triandos
Kima and McNulty's scene together:
Kima: Did you just call the mother of your children a cunt?
and Jimmy's reaction
Prez, the wiretap, and Brown Sugar
and Carver's: No, actually, it all makes sense now.
in regards to why or how Prez is how he is
Bunk's drunken call of "Jimmmmmmmay. Jimmmmmmmaaaaay."
The plural form of "pussy."
"What they gon' study your study?"
Love Wisdom's delivery and tone. "Study your study" is a funny phrase, too.
The references to Colvin as that "rogue" and the like.
Glover's (Slim Charles) delivery of: The thing about the old days is...they the old days."
"Like a forty degree day."
I know Lester made me laugh a couple of times. Can't think of any right now, though. Oddly, can't think of any other for Bunk and Omar.
And a whole lotta Herc and Carver. Mostly nonverbal stuff so I left them off because I'm too lazy to type descriptions.

SERIES SPOILERS
McNulty (observing Bunk's pink shirt): "Nice shirt." Bunk: "Mmmfuckyoummm."
Bunk in pink bathrobe and cigar, his clothes on the floor and charred to fuck.
Freamon's walk; he couldn't catch a pig in a corridor with those legs.
Marlo at the French-talking bank. "Say what?" (I actually feel sorry for him in a way, too; it's important in showing his total lack of life experience and education, despite his reputation on the streets.)
Levy's flinch when Pearlman leaves his office in the final episode.
Daniels, to Bunk: "I thought you were born in pinstripes."
Carver's face when the truck goes over his and Herc's tennis ball wire. LMFAO.
Rawls in the gay bar.
Jay in the bathroom: "Rawls sucks cock."
Greggs, season 2: "Jesus fuck I still cannot type."
Omar comparing his gun to Levy's briefcase; the most inspiring scene of the series.
Herc and Carver deliberating over homosexual what-ifs.
The cross-cutting between Daniels having sex with Rhonnie and Cutty punching his bag. Hahah!
The way Waylon sort of nods in rhythm to his own speech, and jolts his entire body when giving Bubbles speech after speech. It's as if moving his tongue sets off the ants in his pants.

"Look at that bow-legged muthafucka. I made him walk like that."
"Marlo at the French-talking bank. "Say what?" (I actually feel sorry for him in a way, too; it's important in showing his total lack of life experience and education, despite his reputation on the streets.)"
The bank teller was
"hot as balls" -Herc.
"Daniels, to Bunk: "I thought you were born in pinstripes.""
LOL.
"Greggs, season 2: "Jesus fuck I still cannot type.""
"We still fuckin' around with Smith Corona."
"Omar comparing his gun to Levy's briefcase; the most inspiring scene of the series."
How could I forget this?
His wardrobe kills me too.
I forgot about "McNutty."
I forget the Barksadale soldier's name, but I roll everytime I see the part where he copies Cutty's voice and delivery.

I finally started watching Season 5 again. I haven't been able to watch them until now so hopefully I'll have the entire series finished by the end of the week.
Season 5 Spoliers
I just saw Prop Joe die. Marlo is scary... Him, Chris and Snoop. They are more blood thirsty than everyone else and have become my favorites characters. I was also sad to see the blind bartender die. I would look up his name but I don't want to see any spoilers.
I like the addition of the Newspaper. It's interesting too see how Newspapers are slowly dying because of television and the internet.

Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) has been fantastic on The Office. He's been in four episodes so far, and I hope he stays for the duration of the series. Check out the Elba episodes for free over at Hulu or NBC's site.
Elba's in Season 5 episodes 18-21: New Boss, Two Weeks, The Michael Scott Paper Company, and Dream Team.
I think you guys will still enjoy some parts of each episode even when jumping in that far into the season and series.

I've been watching him on "The Office". Very Stringer Bell-like with his character. It goes in interesting contrast to the rest of the characters on the show. In his first appearance on the show, when Michael left the office to go to New York in the middle of the day, I was hoping to see Omar come in and rob the place. (I know he only robbed dealers, but come on! It's Stringer!)

Season 2 is woefully underrated. Though I've not met Mouzone again yet, and haven't re-watched 3 or 4, it might be my favourite, now that I understand the portspeak.
I noticed, this time round, how Nick takes on the mannerisms of Spiros when dealing with others such as Ziggy and Frank. Either great writing or great acting or both.
