I wonder why Kubrick chose to make a Vietnam war movie in 87. It is a great movie, but I feel that it was kind of late. Anyway, Platoon too was made only a couple of years before.

Because it's not just about Vietnam....well it's not for me anyway, it's just set in Vietnam. Amongst other things, it's about America's war mongering and it's duality in that, a nation that goes around preaching peace while fucking with every smaller nation on the planet at some point in the last 100 years, a country that depsite preaching democracy everywhere, tries to bully the rest of the world and even its own citizens into adopting its psyche. This was especially prevalent throughout the "economic" wars during the 80s Reagan period when the film was made. Given that his country was continuing to mess with other countries for it's own economic gain (albeit more "undercover"), the way it did in Vietnam, Kubrick obviously saw it as an important subject at the time.
Even if you want to see it as being JUST about Vietnam, does being made in '87 really stick out that much when films like Born on the 4th July, Casualties of War, Hamburger Hill etc where made after it? What about the second world war? Every year a new film comes out based on that!

I have lost all interest in watching WW2 movies. All I am interested now is a movie on Aghanistan or Iraq. Lot of stuff need to be told about those wars, I guess we hardly have any images being released from Iraq in spite of the ridiculous number of people dying there. And definitely about Hiroshima (yup, WW2)too. American public did not get a lot of images immediately after the bombing and now years of propaganda has built up an elaborate justification for the bombing, conveniently neglecting the fact that civilian killing of that scale remains as one of the biggest terrorist acts.
