Ermanno Olmi (1931- )Il Posto I Fidanzati La Cotta The Tree of Wooden Clogs TTOWC differs from the first three in that it's a period pic. I strongly recommend watching the first three first.

I did not look at your edit I had put TTOWC for download then and now all I have is that. Is it a really bad idea to start with that? I did not know until now that it is so long. I don't know if I can endure a period movie of that length.

It's not a bad idea in that I think TTOWC is a masterpiece, but given your affinity for certain thematic material and content, I recommend you start with Il Posto and I Fidanzati which are both out on Criterion DVDs! La Cotta is also on the Il Posto disc.
Actually if you like The Apu Trilogy I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy TTOWC in some fasion. However, if running time is your concern, Il Posto is 93 minutes, I Fidanzati is 84 minutes, and La Cotta is 49 minutes.

I think I'll follow your recommended order. I don't want to give up on a possible good director because of my problem with running length and genre (period dramas belonging to pre-20th century is one of my least fav genres).

I have a feeling you'd like I Fidanzati more. Start there. Then Il Posto then La Cotta.
What are some period dramas that take place before the 20th century that have led to your aversion?

I haven't watched too many of these completely. So I cannot attribute my aversion to a bunch of films that made me think that way, probably it was inherent in me, lol. I change channels soon if the movie is about women in long flowing basket like skirts talking coyly about some charming man who rides horses. Don't ask me the movie titles, but I am sure there are a hundred movies with this plot, lol. I hate braveheart, gladiator, 300, amistad, Elizabeth, Shakespeare in love etc. The ones that I did like include Painted Veil, Prestige, The heart in me... can't recollect more right away. I am very reluctant to watch Marie Antoinette, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice etc. I don't know, it must be some bias, but I cannot take them seriously and relate to their (the characters') issues.

I see. Well, TToWC is about peasants/lower class, and, again, if you liked the Apu Trilogy I can see you liking TToWC in some fashion.
I don't remember if you've seen Barry Lyndon and The Magnificent Ambersons. Those are amazing films.
Anyway, off you go to I Fidanzati!

I Fidanzati Highly recommended!! Told ya. I have a feeling you'd like I Fidanzati more. Start there. Then Il Posto then La Cotta. Did you watch I Fidanzati third out of spite? Or did you want to save for last (out of the three) what you thought you'd like the best? Or was it because of Netflix sending you what was available first?

haha, neither Kino I somehow remembered your recommendation incorrectly. When I was populating the netflix queue, I got confused between Il Posto and I Fidanzati (partly because I don't know what the titles mean).

wetdog and capo, I don't know why it didn't strike me before, but I would recommend his movies to both of you. capo, I see that nowadays you look for "social angle" and "social context" in every movie you watch. His movies are full of all that - class struggle, compassion for factory workers, society, religion etc etc. However I STRONGLY recommend that you DON"T read anything about the director until you watch his films. Especially until you watch ToWC.
