The reason that movies like Fight Club or The Usual Suspects succeed in having an excellent twist is because the viewer is allowed to be hidden from some important aspects of the plot throughout.
Movies like Employee of the Month (the 2004 with Matt Dillon, not the Jessica Simpson one) and Lucky Number Slevin are obviously inspired by the above mentioned movies, but fail for an obvious reason. The reason is the all-knowing narrator. Its ok to have some details left out when the story is being told from Kevin Spacey or Edward Norton's characters, given the circumstances set around each. When, however you DON'T have that sort of character, the director and screenwriter are simply just attempting to trick the audience. I find this "trick" annoying, sloppy, and stupid.
Righteous Kill is one of the most egregious example of this. Information is left out of scenes purely so the viewer can be tricked at the end. Its insulting.
The rest of the movie is weak, although the opening montage provides some great unintentional comedy.

Hate to say this, but RIGHTEOUS KILL sucking doesn't surprise me at all.
