I saw Kozintsev's King Lear at the cinema the other night, and was reminded of Jüri Järvet's towering performance. Though I've not seen much, it's definitely up there with Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet for best Shakespeare film performance. Staggering.
De Niro in Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter; I can't think of better performances than these four. All of the performances in The Deer Hunter are amazing.
Hackman in The French Connection, The Conversation; exhilarating and haunting respectively.
Delon in The Samurai - cool; word.
Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James...; the most complex performance in years.
Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood; inspiring, in voice, in facial expression, in physical movement.
John Hurt in The Elephant Man; great voice-acting, up there with Claude Rains.
In terms of films really coming (more) to life when certain people are in the scene...
Mark Ruffalo in Zodiac.
Elias Koteas in Crash; so fucking intense.
Benicio Del Toro in Traffic; talk about minimalist screen presence.
Charles Laughton in Jamaica Inn; my favourite Hitchcock villain.
Bergman worked with some great actors: Josephson and Ullman in Scenes from a Marriage come to mind first.
But my favourite leading pair is Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation.
^^ Just a few that came immediately to mind. I'll have inevitably forgotten lots.

I agree with you on all performances in deer hunter being good. And also good call on Mark Ruffalo in Zodiac.
How do you guys rate Matt Damon in Goodwill Hunting? I was pretty impressed.

Yeah, he's very good; so is Robin Williams, from what I recall. I rate Damon quite highly among mainstream stars.

I think Tom Cruise is absolutely untouched in terms of mainstream stars.

In terms of films really coming (more) to life when certain people are in the scene... By this criteria I'd say Marlon Brando in The Godfather is easily number one.

A lot of people think highly of Brando's role in Apocalypse Now. To me, his role was a minor one compared to Martin Sheen's. I am not saying that minor roles can't be impacting, but his role/acting was of minimal impact for me. martin Sheen excelled though, as a silent spectator and an unwilling participant in the madness.

Some of my favorites come from tv.
Ian McShane as Al Swearengen in Deadwood - at once hilarious and revolting, scarily and impossibly perfect performances
James Gandolfini as Tony in The Sopranos Nancy Marchand as Livia in The Sopranos Dominic Chianese in The Sopranos Ricky Gervais as David Brent in The Office Edie Falco as Carmela in The Sopranos Michael Jordan as Wallace in The Wire Clark Peters as Lester in The Wire Robin Weigert as Trixie in Deadwood Jamie Hector as Marlo in The Wire Idris Elba as Stringer in The Wire The cast of Six Feet Under More from Deadwood (Powers Boothe!), The Wire, and The Sopranos John Hamm, Elizabeth Moss, and John Slattery (Mad Men) Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, and Chris Williams in Curb
Lists will never die!!!!!!!
And it's great to see the interest in Fassbinder films. You shall be exposed to the greatness that is Hanna Schygulla.

I think nearly all of the performances in The Sopranos are awful.
Edie Falco is wonderful though.

Every major lead and supporting performance in Freaks and Geeks. Damn near all of the bit players, too.

I think Tom Cruise is absolutely untouched in terms of mainstream stars. Considering how mainstream he is, his good movie to bad movie ratio is outstanding. There isn't many Cruise movies I don't really enjoy.

Watching some of the finest tv episodes in the past few weeks have made me realize that I have overlooked the actors from The Shield again. Michael Chiklis and CCH Pounder killed the last few episodes of the series especially the last two.
