Kino I'd like to hear your thoughts on this film when you get the chance. I think his talent for pacing and interweaving stories is at its best in this film.
Gangwon-do is the province east of Seoul, with beautiful mountains and beaches. Naturally it's more relaxed so many Seoulites vacation there to escape the daily pressure. I felt this was a key part of the film as the two characters couldn't really leave their lives behind, Ji soon was still distraught from the break up and the unemployed husband couldn't get over his lack of social status. All of this anxeity comes out over drinking, as is very common with Koreans, a supposed form of relaxation causing more strife. That and they could not just enjoy nature but they were looking for romance the whole time, and the husband even went to a club as if there were no reason to even leave Seoul in the first place.
Now the part I find most intriguing and puzzling is that they both run into the couple in the mountains. The woman falling of the cliff resembles the story Ji-soon tells about the boy who liked her in high school, and the husband tries to make a rendezvous with her, but then in the end identifies the man to the police. Like some of his other films its fatalistic but also shows the redundancy of the characters lives and actions.
I think it's his best film, though I need to watch Virgin again and of course I need to get to Gangwon ASAP!
