Way Down EastDW Griffith 1920 USA Tricked into a fake marriage, a poor country girl migrates to a new village, but her past follows her.
Heavy-handed Griffith, manipulating the narrative in full swing and with full confidence on the success of The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance some years earlier. It's tediously long and very verbose, but builds to an impressive climax and sappy coda; worth seeing alone for Lillian Gish's fantastic performance, and the unforgettable ending atop ice rafts floating down a river.
