Directed By: Raoul Walsh
Written By: Virginia Kellogg, Ivan Goff, and Ben Roberts.
Synopsis:
Cody Jarrett is the sadistic leader of a ruthless gang of thieves. Afflicted by terrible headaches and fiercely devoted to his 'Ma,' Cody is a volatile, violent, and eccentric leader. Cody's top henchman wants to lead the gang and attempts to have an 'accident' happen to Cody, while he is running the gang from in jail. But Cody is saved by an undercover cop, who thereby befriends him and infiltrates the gang. Finally, the stage is set for Cody's ultimate betrayal and downfall, during a big heist at a chemical plant
-From IMDB, also known as "The Society for People Who Cannot Think Good About Things."
White Heat is the story of a violent and mentally conflicted robber named Cody Garrett, who controls a gang of thieves in the late 40s.
After a botched train robbery, the gang holes up in a dirty little house in northern California, where they tend to a member who had his face scalded off by steam during the robbery. After a bit of conversation, the crew decides to leave, and so Cody charges one of his men with the task of killing the scalded crook. The man doesn't do it, and when the police arrive they attain clues that could lead to Cody's arrest.
The film is one of many good gangster flicks from the 40s, but is better than most because of the sympathetic view it shows us of Cody.
I'd write more, but I'm tired. Discuss.
