This is now my favorite Spielberg film and it's impressive to me that it was his first, as well as made for TV. I know Spielberg doesn't get much love around here, and I'm not a huge fan myself, but he does come up with an entertaining movie now and then and this was very entertaining! The truck itself with the unseen driver was as good as any villain I've seen, and the fast pace made it fun to watch with it's very effective simple plot.

It was a very good and economical directorial debut, wasn't it? I mean what other such impressive made-for-TV productions have you or I seen? Not that many, and most are HBO or TNT-produced.
As for why FCM hates Spielberg, well I was a dick in hating him back in high school....except I left high school and grew up. To throw stones at City Hall or hating Dubya doesn't make one so bold or rebelious or insurgent, just...ordinary.
Of course I loved CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, MUNICH, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, and Capo fucking hated each one of them.
Whatever, DUEL was pretty good. His follow-up (and often ignored) SUGARLAND EXPRESS was pretty good too, try to check that out sometime blibble.

I don't hate Spielberg, nor his films. Just a few, right? Which I can sorta agree with you on. But I never said you hated Spielberg. Read my posting again. ;D [/quote]

I didn't mean to start yet another Spielberg love/hate conversation. I should have written my short review on the movie itself.
The cafe scene made me laugh.

Read my posting again. ;D "As for why FCM hates Spielberg..."Just thought I'd, at the very least, distinguish myself from the FCM members who hate Spielberg; especially since I was mentioned two sentences later. And no, I don't really hate any of his films. I think there are several very misjudged, and a lot are simply tedious. Anyway, to get back on topic... Is it too facile and crude to interpret Duel as a story of a closeted homosexual? I forget the dialogue and tone of David's phone conversation to his wife, but it might be significant that he's "away from home", in the wilderness so to speak, with this aggressive and provocative and unknown vehicle ramming him from behind, forcing him to come to terms with his own masculinity and to take the bull by the horns. (Formally speaking, the narrative seems to mirror David's psychological state; it lulls and loses purpose when the back-ramming truck is absent. Likewise, David seems to find purpose and "balls" when the truck appears and re-appears.)

Question, what is his most tedious? Probably Munich, for me. Though I drifted off after twenty minutes of Crystal Skull - that was baaaaaaad.

Kind I make a request? Can we start a "Spielberg rocks/sucks" thread and any time someone decides to discuss him as a director they can post there? I truly enjoyed the movie Duel, and really didn't mean to start this type of conversation [/echo] again, again... again........ again...........

That said, still sorry, I mean DUEL was a pretty good, very impressive debut of a guy who will become King of Hollywood. Which I don't know if he still retains that title.

I was going to watch this on TCM last night, but didn't feel like being glued to the TV until 6 AM.
I really want to see this though. I have a theory that Spielberg could actually make a decent movie if you removed the budget and effects that he always abuses to all hell.

I love your conservative self-loathing condescension schtick, Ronnie. I learned it from the best. Master. But really, "That's about as honorable as being the king of straight to VHS pornography."? That's about as profound and contributive to the mental buffet as my endless Michael Bay rants.

That's about as honorable as being the king of straight to VHS pornography. So what now, gonna spray paint on an abandoned building? Come on rebel, whatcha gonna next in being bold? Let's be realistic; as far as this issue goes, you're probably the minority within this community. In this particular situation, you are the rebel, and I'd find it hard to believe that not even a portion of that could be contributed to some sort of subconscious queue. Otherwise, there would really be no incentive to post this last post; it's all feeding into the innate desire that I think most people have to rebel. But enough of that bullshit. Let's put it this way... Spielberg is like anonymous sex. It's instant gratification. It's exciting and pleasurable, even a little fun, but there is still a sort of void or emptiness that follows it directly. I've never walked out of a Spielberg film with anything I didn't already have before hand. Maybe I enjoyed myself when I was in the theater, but in the end it was just another way to kill a night. It's like, "what was the point?"
