Do the Right Thing Spike Lee 1989My third joint. Lee shows a real flair for lighting, or at least this film does. Perhaps credit is due to cinematographer Ernest Dickerson. The film was much less plot-oriented than I expected, and Lee shows real prowess in writing and creating the many characters, and all his black characters come with a certain sense of self-awareness, reflexivity perhaps, and a dash of irony here and there. The always underappreciated Danny Aiello is at the top of his game, and while the racial questions posed here may have lost some of their intensity with time passed, this still stands as quite a film, especially for the often underrepresented (in film) black community.

The thing I love about Do the Right Thing is the fact that Lee doesn't just throw it on one race, but blames it on all of them.
