La marche de l'empereur March of the Penguins
Director: Luc Jacquet
2005 France
Each winter, Antartican Emperor penguins brave the natural forces for a journey that takes them back to their birthplace for the purpose of finding a mate and breeding their own chicks. An unconventional love story that has left viewers in love with the creatures and their story.
There are three main reasons why I think this film is better than it should be.
1. The obvious stunning cinematography. The set up shots that immerse the viewer into the faraway land. The long takes which absorb into our mind.
2. The sound. Whether it's the epical score, the howling winds, or even the sound of the penguins footsteps stomping through the icy snow. The sound manipulates your feelings - you could find yourself shivering when the winter storms haunt the penguins.
3. The characterization. The penguins are treated with the utmost respect. They are not animals, or fish, or birds. They are like humans. Every small detail is captured. Lovers cuddle. Parents "cry" for their frozen dead chicks. A villanious seal snarls at the camera. A gull picks on the helpless penguin chicks. These aren't just things - they really have feelings.
It's great to see such a movie finding a nice sized audience.
