HARD TO KILL (1990) - ***You know, a villain is REALLY a douchebag if they have an Andy Warhol-esque portrait of themselves hanging in the living room of their mansion. Since I have open contempt for the wit-without-talent Warhol, I want Steven Seagal to kill this baddie already because he's a criminal at bad taste. But he's got enough motivation of his own. Seagal is a cop who's captured visual/audio evidence of a corrupt U.S. Senator (William Sadler), who has Seagal and his family shot down. Stuck in a secret coma for 7 years, Seagal awakens to find his wife and kid dead, and the Senator seemingly on his way to the White House. Seagal aint happy. The difference between this and the other Seagal revenge action-vehicle OUT FOR JUSTICE is that HARD TO KILL does not run out of gas and is consistent within its action narrative. There aren't any glaring...well, maybe not as many glaring...plotholes as usual in a Seagal movie, even if I still have the usual questions. I mean, why is there a pool table involved in most of Seagal's movie fights? Why in such brawls, do these jobbers engage him only one at a time? Oh right, I forgot. He needs an excuse for a stupid pun of a one-liner A major problem I had with OUT FOR JUSTICE was how after the dead person in question was being avenged, he was revealed to be such a naughty guy, he probably did deserve to die. Like WAR we got earlier this year, KILL is a simple junk revenge plot, and I'm a sucker for such tales. Then again, how can I NOT enjoy a movie where the hero stabs his wife's murderer in the neck with a cue stick, then shouts: "This is for my wife. Fuck you and die!" No speeches, just a violent kick to the head to finish things off. Just like this movie, its not imaginative, but it gets the job done.

Also, the first Seagal picture where he features the infamous ponytail.
Yeah I bet you're so glad to know that vital fact now.

Ronnie, you cannot talk about a Steven "Cegadas" Segal movie without at least making a refering to the Venerable Vern. What did the Venerable Vern has to say about this movie? Curious minds need to know.

Ronnie, you cannot talk about a Steven "Cegadas" Segal movie without at least making a refering to the Venerable Vern. What did the Venerable Vern has to say about this movie? Curious minds need to know. That original review was written before I read SEAGALOGY, a must-read book. As for what he said, basically he uses HARD TO KILL as an example of how people whine about action movies not bothering with story or drama, and Vern argues that many actioneers that try that approach don't work because that "story" (usually not that good) gets in the way of the action narrative. Good stuff, but Arkady just go and buy the book from Amazon or something. It's about 10 bucks, and its worth the money. I mean come on, better to give him the money than those guys who made MAX PAYNE, right? Also, you should try to review PAYNE. That looked like a shit burger.
