Jag är nyfiken - en film i gult (I am curious - Yellow) ** (1967) IMDB Link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0061834/This movie finds a place here only because I watched it as a part of my recent exploration of banned movies. Otherwise this is unlike many of the movies listed above. It is a swedish movie about a free spirited girl who wants to explore different political and personal beliefs. It would help if you know the 1969 political scenario in Sweden. It is an intelligent movie, but is somewhat boring. I watched it in two sittings and that helped. This movie is apparently important from a historical standpoint, but that is not something I am too concerned about. Good quality movie, probably meriting a rewatch. BTW, the controversy regarding this movie was because of explicit nudity.

I watched Baise-moi in an absolutely foul mood. I'd had some PC troubles that day, was home alone so couldn't sort it out, and in the end I fucked the whole drive, so I banged in this film, which I'd borrowed off a friend, and just sat there emotionless. In a way, I felt a little uneasy watching it, since, having no PC to distract me, I let my imagination run wild, and imagined me in the position of some of those girls' victims. Not nice. So in that sense I think it's a success. Still, I don't care for that uber-feminist stance; some of the most intelligent movies I think which push boundaries are those which acknowledge the male gaze as a norm and self-consciously work on it. Anybody can make a "Woman Power" kind of thing.

Nice thread. I've always been fascinated by the so called "video nasties". One with a big reputation that I haven't seen is the Guinea Pig series. You've probably heard the story of Charlie Sheen seeing the first film and convinced it was a real "snuff" film took it to the FBI to be investigated. ;D This is a good site. Very comprehensive and interesting www.melonfarmers.co.uk/nasties.htmNot to hijack your thread but what does everyone here consider to be the most extreme, unsettling or graphic thing they've seen in film? For me it's always brutal attacks on usually undeserving victims. The murders/beatings in Heavenly Creatures, The Life of Jesus and Bully were awful. The violence in Twentynine Palms was horrific too.

I was almost sure that one of you would have see and liked 'I am curious - yellow'. Hmmm...
Jake, I have loooked at the video nasties list. It seems like UK and many other european countries have banned a lot of relatively tame movies. It is ironic that Italy, where most of these bold movies originated, had banned these. However, in today's time, most of them have been cleared with cuts in UK, though some other european countires continue to ban them.
Regarding your other question, I think the turtle slaughter scene in Cannibal Holocaust is the most graphic thing I have ever seen. If you are talking about disturbing movies, many mainstream movies where I can identify with the characters disturb me. I can't pinpoint one.
I am considering watching this : vases de noces (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072355/ ) But I don't know if I can withstand it. Looks too disturbing in a psychological sense, has anyone heard of it? BTW I hae a few more movies lined up for viewing.

Vase De Noces/ Wedding Trough/ The Pig Fucking Movie **** (1974) IMDB Link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0072355/I am almost in tears as I type this. Most of the movies reviewed before this are just plain gory or disgusting. Though this has all that, it is an extremely tragic and sad story. This is in spite of it not having a single line of dialogue and me watching a very poor quality print. It is not a silent movie, but the sounds are just the background music and some animal sounds. I won't recommend this to anyone. And that is a compliment.

Wetdog, thanks for the recommendations. After watching Vase de Noces, I suffered a minor emotional breakdown, tough to put in words. I don't know if it was due to watching so many of these disturbing movies all at once. Have any of you ever got physically affected by movies? I decided to take a break, though I later watched another banned movie called "The house on the edge of the park" (review will follow). On checking about these shorts, I stumbled upon a list by a website called IGN. Their list can be found here: blogs.ign.com/Horror_Brain/2006/06/29/23243/I won't be visiting these for a while.

The House on the Edge of the Park (No stars) (1980) IMDB Link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0080503/This is a plain B-movie with no reason to be banned. Ruggero Deodato, who made Cannibal Holocaust, directed this movie. This is a big disappointment in every way. Neither does it explore any new theme, nor is it big on shock value. This has a plot resembling that of "Last house on the left" but is executed in a much more b-gradish way. Only redeeming point is the twist at the end of the movie.

I'm not sure if you've seen it yet or not (or if it would fit into the context of this thread; I don't know if this movie was ever banned anywhere or not) but Ichi the Killer might tickle your fancy.

Valenti, It is on my list because it is one of those movies that comes up in IMDB recommendations based on similar searches. Don't know when I will watch it though.

It shouldn't be at the top of your priority list. Or at least, I never liked it that much.

The man who wrote the novel, the Marquis de Sade, is a particularly twisted individual. Probably a blast at parties, though Marquis de Sade is the man. When I met Ralph Nader about a month or so back, we had a brief conversation about him.

What was Ralph Nader's opinion on the guy?
de Sade was a good writer, I always thought, but I don't 100% agree with his life's philosophy.

Nader quoted him. He wanted some man-loving with him.

The Marquis was a pimp. He was morbidly obese yet still got the ladies/men.

Is Nader a fan of Salò as well?

I didn't ask, but we did share a common interest in sadism and sodomy.

Cutting Moments ** (1997) IMDB Link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0159391/This is a series of 5 short movies, with lengths varying between 5 min to 25 min. I must say that I haven't watched short movies before and had no idea what to expect. All the movies deal with boredom, depression, banality and general pointlessness of things. I somehow relate to the themes very much. As far as gore is concerned, it is rather very minimal and powerful in the only scene where it is really graphic. This movie needs to be watched more for its subject treatment than for shock value. Recommended.

Noooo-no-no-nonono. Cutting Moments is ONE short film. It's the one in which the woman cuts off her own lips
, directed by Douglas Buck. It's packaged on DVD with Crack Dog, Don't Nag Me, Bowl of Oatmeal and Principles of Karma, which are completely unrelated, made by different people. Are these the other four you watched? It's also available on a DVD with Buck's other three shorts: After All (1998), Home (1998), and the quite astonishing featurette Prologue (2003).
