Ive been rewatching all of the Coen movies and reading a book giving philosophic discussion behind all of their work called THE DUDE ABIDES. I must say, Im having a blast. they really havent made a movie that doesnt reward rewatches (although I won't watch Ladykillers again so I dont know on that one). No Country for Old Men Miller's Crossing Fargo The Big Lebowski Blood Simple Rasing Arizona Burn After Reading The Man Who Wasn't There Barton Fink The Hudsucker Proxy O Brother Where Art Thou? Paris J'taime short Intolerable Cruelty The Ladykillers (0) want to see A Serious Man, but limited release is screwing me over. Local cineplexs showing Couples Retreat and All About Steve on multiple screens but cant squeeze in some guys that won Best Picture/director 2 years ago?

I was wondering if anyone had seen "A Serious Man". It is playing in Atlanta, and I might try and catch it tomorrow night.

With the Coens big success lately, why does it have limited showings?

This doesn't really answer your ?, but I've heard that it might be their "strangest" film. The ending already has people talking.
TONIGHT!

How do you guys feel about the common charge that they condescend to their characters?

ive always thought the charge was more about lack of compassion toward their characters, largely because of the way violence is frequently potrayed. Ive always kind of dug that about them. Violence SHOULD make us feel uneasy, and I wish more directors could capture that.
if there is a charge about them condescending out there, I dont really think it is seeing the point in a lot of the films. maybe we laugh at Marge Gunderson, HI McDunnough, and the Dude...but I have a hard time think that the Coens dont see them as the winners. I think they have a lot of respect for the simple life and being happy with what you have. Characters motivated by a certain kind of greed usually end up dead. I think that the Ladykillers is by FAR their worst movie, perhaps because it paints the good and bad categories a little bit too obviously. Regardless, its a theme thats there through a hell of a lot of their films, good and bad.

Yeah, so I didn't make it to the theater last night. I agree with jrod. On the surface, Marge and the Dude might look and talk like idiots, but they are the heroes. Marge's words to the arrested man at the end of "Fargo" might sound simple enough, but for me, it shows her to be the smartest person in the picture.
