I have trouble crediting Duel as a TV movie. Not that there is any less worth to be found in TV films (indeed, I rank it as one of Spielberg's best films, and one of the most promising directorial debuts ever), but, although it was made for TV, didn't it also get a theatrical release? I'm sure it must have, but could be wrong on that assumption. Whatever, it's a great film.
The trouble, however, is that, due to Spielberg's noted target audience between Duel and Schindler's List, I have not seen many of these films since I was very young, and thus my rating is to be taken with a pinch of salt for the following films: Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, the Last Crusade, Hook and Jurassic Park. All others have had faily recent viewings; I have Amistad and Close Encounters of the Third Kind and did have Empire of the Sun, which, like a few other films of my unwatched collection, have gone missing.
Both overrated and underrated, though deserving respect from any budding filmmaker.

1975: Jaws 1977: Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark 1982: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial 1984: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1989: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 1991: Hook 1993: Jurassic Park 1993: Schindler's List 1997: The Lost World: Jurassic Park 1998: Saving Private Ryan 2001: A.I: Artificial Intelligence 2002: Minority Report 2005: War of the Worlds I think Spielberg is the best director alive today. Not my favourite, but the best. He has proved he can do any genre (the difference inbetween Jurassic Park and Schindler's List is quite remarkable) and his vision for fillms is unique, making his films indistinguishable. In my opinion, Schindler's List is his best; but for entertainment, E.T.

MUNICH (2005) - ****1/2 Great picture. Easily Spielberg's best since LIST back in 1993. I'm going to watch it tomorow. I'm sure you are right though about "Munich". I've been watching it's progress since it was green-lighten back during the summer.

Updated.
Much to my surprise, I left the cinema today very indifferent to Munich. While War of the Worlds excited me with its fast-paced action and wonderful effects, Munich, much like Schindler's List (same year as Jurassic Park) seems to have been made to show his versatility these days. One of the reasons why I hated Memoirs of a Geisha was the use of Chinese actresses playing Japanese characters speaking English to cater for the audience; why, then, shouldn't I criticise an international cast playing Israelis speaking English, likewise, for the benefit of us?
I would have loved to have seen Melville make the film; in all his meticulous precision, I doubt he'd've spent so much time spelling things out for us.
I really didn't want to give it no stars; there were things I liked about it, at times, but given the overall vibe of the film, I find it far inferior to other revenge thrillers of late, such as Oldboy or Dead Man's Shoes. With Brokeback Mountain and Crash underwhelming me so much, my hopes for Oscar season now lie on Good Night, and Good Luck and Capote.

To me Spielberg is 2 different people. I call them old Spielberg and new Spielberg. Old Spielberg made great classics such as jaws, Indiana Jones saga, Schindler's List and Jurrasic Park. After Jurrasic Park he starts to drop. Amistad was all right and Saving Private Ryan was great but then comes A:I, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can and War of the Worlds. Which have got to be some of the worst movies ever made. Personally I think Spielberg was a great director but some where along the line he lost his way. However I have not seen Munich yet.
On a different topic Capo why did you not like Crash? Personally I really liked the movie. Thought it was very interesting and great acting. With beautiful cinematography.

A film not without its explosive moments of potential, but for a melodrama full of dramatic irony and overkill, the final impression is dubious: an ambitious directorial debut effort, and yet it seems to offer no further insight into racism than what we already know. Oddly, though, of the three Oscar nominees I've seen, Haggis' film is the best. Bring on Mr. Clooney...

Finally, Wet Dog, you've seen Munich. What were your thoughts on it?
