"The Mission" - AMAZING STORIES
So I reviewed that Peter Hyams episode, I'll review one of two episodes that the Beard shot for his short-lived television series.
Most AMAZING STORIES episodes were half a hour, but "The Mission" is a hour long special, though I think it extra length is unnecessary, for the extra material comes off as padding in my opinion. Not enough to hurt it necessarily, but I noticed it, which is enough.
Starring Kevin Costner and Keifer Sutherland before they were movie stars (and before their careers crashed and burned), its about a WW2 bombing crew on their last mission when tragedy occurs. The hull gunner (on bottom of plane), who is also a talented cartoonist, is trapped and can't escape his hatch. The landing gears are jammed, and they only have 15 minutes of gasoline left. When they crash land, the dude is gonna get smashed like Mash Potatoes. Oh dear!
I thought it was odd how one scene when Kiefer in glasses lectures the crew, reminded me greatly of his character in DARK CITY. I mean those movies were seperated by a decade, and yet in that one moment, they essentially act the same. Fucking weird.
"The Mission" is the Spielberg that FCM likes to despise easily, though not as bad (at times) as the Beard can be when he's in this mood. The nonsense shots of the airport with the gunner's pregnant wife and chaplin giving the last rites made me groan, but otherwise I was involved with this little melodrama with apparently no hope of escape for our hapless GI Joe.
But what will make or break the episode for you will be the Deus Ex Machinas plot device that resolves the situation. If it bothered me enough, I might complain how its some superficial (a favorite word at FCM) theme, but it didn't. That said, I won't blame anyone if they cry bullshit at it.
If 1 is BAD, 2 is WATCHABLE, and 3 is GOOD...I give "The Mission" a 2, or WATCHABLE, but not a must-see.

I've been a dick to some folks who broadly dismiss him, about as relevant and defiantly special as throwing a rock at the school PA system, or painting graffiti saying "Pussy."
Or maybe am I too forgiving of him?
